Hello! I’m Molly Keegan, Director of Adult Day Services at Active Generations. I’ve had the privilege of serving as a Board Member with Employment Disability Resources for the past two years. The work of Employment Disability Resources is so important in our community as it brings continued awareness of the value individuals living with disabilities bring to our communities and workplaces. Enhanced workplace morale, innovation and inclusivity are just some of the incredible benefits EDR can help you discover when businesses hire individuals with disabilities.
I have worked at Active Generations for over seventeen years. Many of the individuals whom I have worked alongside and supported are those who are over the age of sixty. On August 21st, 2024, the world honored older adults by celebrating National Senior Citizen’s Day. This day reminds us to recognize the wisdom and accomplishments of our older friends, family members and neighbors.
Although my professional role is working in the adult day services programs, we are a part of a greater mission within the Active Generations community. It’s our goal to support the overall wellness of all adults, regardless of age or abilities. Senior centers play a crucial role in providing support and resources for older adults with disabilities. They provide state-of-the-art health facilities, special interest clubs, and activities that cater to the needs of seniors, including those with disabilities. In addition to the social and physical wellness aspects of healthy aging, Active Generations has support programs that aid individuals who wish to remain living in their own home. Both Workers on Wheels and the Nutrition programs offer services that support adults with disabilities. Whether it is needing a ride to the grocery store or a doctor’s appointment, needing a home-delivered meal or for those who wish to dine in the company of peers in a fully accessible gathering space, your local Senior Center can provide the support you need.
Celebrating National Senior Citizens Day is an opportunity for us all to reflect on what we want and how we see ourselves as we age. If connecting with your peers in a supportive and welcoming environment is a part of where you see your future self, senior centers provide programs and activities in your neighborhood accessible every day to you. By keeping active as you age, both mentally and physically, you stay stronger, which supports independent living. Again, this is especially important to those who are aging in place in their own homes.
