Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

by Kellie Hauglid, EDR Board Member

My name is Kellie Hauglid and I have bProfessional headshot of Kellie Hauglid.een on the Employment Disability Resources (EDR) Board for 6 years. I am an Insurance Sales Specialist at the Cindy Van Gerpen Agency. Since working here, I have had the privilege to educate coworkers about different disabilities as many of the insureds we work with have a variety of disabilities.

September is known for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month (CCAM) and also National Life Insurance Awareness Month. Childhood Cancer Awareness Month (CCAM) is recognized every September by organizations around the world to raise awareness and funds for children and adolescents with cancer and their families. The month
also aims to highlight the challenges children face when they are diagnosed with cancer, which is still the leading cause of death by disease for children under 14. Since the 1970s, the five-year survival rate for pediatric cancer has improved from 58-68% to 83-88% in recent years.

In 2023 I interviewed and offered a position to an individual who was in remission with leukemia. At the time he was supposed to start in his new position with us, he informed us that his cancer had returned and that he was no longer seeking employment to be able to spend more time with his family and to focus on the life he has left.
Recently, I met with one of his family members and found out this individual had lost his battle with leukemia.

How does childhood cancers relate to employment for adults? Most people diagnosed with childhood or adolescent cancer will develop a significant health condition related to their diagnosis or treatment by
the time they reach age 45. As an Insurance Sales Specialist, I take the time to educate new parents about the importance of putting life insurance on their children and how life insurance can help provide financial security for their families. The future is unknown for all of us and our health situations. My Agency has also been a big supporter and donor of the Ronald McDonald House Charities. I encourage you to reach out to Employment Disability Resources with any questions you may have regarding individuals with any type of disability. EDR
can provide resources, training, education, and much more!
