Success Story - Sergio

As a non-English speaker with limited vision and serious health issues, he required assistance in finding employment. In June 2016, Sergio applied for services with South Dakota Service to the Blind and Visually Impaired (SBVI).

With a long history as a roofer, Sergio found that his previous occupation was no longer feasible given his declining eyesight and health. He collaborated with a rehabilitation counselor who referred him to the Skills of Blindness Training program at the South Dakota Rehabilitation Center for the Blind (SDRC). During this training, Sergio developed essential skills, including cooking, navigating with a white cane, and using adaptive devices to enhance his independence. This training significantly boosted his confidence and self-sufficiency.

Job coaching was provided to help him master his initial task of distributing samples, and as his skills improved, he was entrusted with additional responsibilities. To aid in communication, Sergio utilizes the “Say Hi” app on his iPhone. Additionally, he worked with a benefits specialist to understand how his employment would impact his benefits.

Throughout his journey, Sergio received comprehensive support, including medical restoration services, low vision services, an interpreter during training, English tutoring, dental care, and assistive technology devices. SBVI facilitated connections to various resources, such as Long Term Supports and Services, Independent Living Choices, the Department of Social Services, DakotaLink, and Sutran (transportation services). With the assistance of SBVI and these additional agencies, Sergio successfully moved into his own apartment and is now living independently while employed.
